Ceramic Maker

Andrew Walker is an independent pottery maker from the UK. He creates handmade contemporary ceramics with a unique identity. Working from his two pottery studios in Works 57 Sheffield UK, he constructs hand-built stoneware pottery vessels and sculptures. Inspiration comes from our industrial landscape, mainly the iconic block-like geometric buildings from the mid-century where he’s drawn to their simplistic, graphic like quality. ‘I like to look at these structures and break their components down, the shapes and symmetrical lines form the basis for creating a starting point in my construction. I also draw inspiration from the shadows these structures create, often taking into consideration how these impact on the negative space’. The new handmade architectural ceramic range showcases a step towards introducing bright colours. These bright tones reflect the type of colour pallets seen within architecture that contrast with the often-stark raw materials. His simple approach to pottery design and form, often combines geometrical shapes to construct ceramic vessels as a way to bridge the gap between functional handmade pottery and contemporary handmade ceramic sculpture.

Andrew Walker Ceramics is a Sheffield Pottery Studio which offers uniquely created pottery classes for anyone wishing to explore the art of making through the medium of clay. With a fully equipped pottery studio situated just outside Sheffield City Centre UK, I have a range of pottery classes suitable for the adult beginner ceramic artists or even those with more experience to create beautiful and practical ceramic objects. From the simple steps of hand building a bowl, onto more challenging classes that give you the opportunity to create larger pieces. I operate on a small class basis to ensure one to one tuition, helping you step by step to create a piece of contemporary pottery you will be proud of. I also offer an Open Studio Membership as well as individual tuition for anyone looking to develop their skills further and learn more about the beauty of hand-building from clay.
