My Great Pottery Throw Down Challenge Week 4

Here’s another one of my challenges from The Great Pottery Throw Down TV show. The contestants were challenged to throw a set of vessels for naked raku.

My throwing ability is little limited and unfortunately I don’t have access to raku firing; so my challenge was to hand build a vessel and try to replicate the aesthetic of this fantastic unpredictable glazing process.

White body clay has been in high demand so I used my usual standard teaching buff clay body and glazed the vessel in satin white. Using pieces of cotton dipped in iron oxide I draped them to try and replicate the movement & patterns created by the traditional method of burning horse hair.

I wasn’t sure how it would turn out and even though it’s not quite raku I’m actually pleasantly surprised with the overall look.

Keep an eye out on social media or here for my future challenges.
